Research That Shapes What We Build

How I turn surveys, online communities and ad tests into decisions the product team can use.

The situation
Feature launches often start with "we built it, now market it." I wanted the team to know who a feature is for and what pain it solves before we wrote a single headline.
What I did
Three kinds of research, used together:
- Yearly surveys of professionals. We turn them into whitepapers with insights about how people work and present. They feed our content, PR and sales, and they tell the product team what users struggle with.
- Community research before launches. I read what people say on Reddit, Product Hunt and other communities about the problem a new feature solves. I bring the patterns back to the team: who it is for, what words they use, what they doubt.
- A persona × pain method for testing demand. I list user types and their pains, write one ad angle for each pair, and run them side by side. The winning pairs show which message and which audience to scale. I now use this method in every product I work on, and my MSc thesis builds on it.
What I learned
Users rarely describe features. They describe frustrations. The job is to listen closely enough to hear the feature inside the frustration.
What changed
Launches now start from evidence about the user, and the same research serves product, marketing and sales.
